Mastodon To Release ‘The Hunter’ September 27

Myspace: Mastodon will release their new album, The Hunter, on September 27 via Warner Bros. The record, a follow-up to 2009’s Crack the Skye, is a “jump-on-your-bed, get naked, and go streaking kind of record,” according to frontman Brent Hinds. The singer recently told SPIN.com, “I haven’t had this feeling about a Mastodon record since [2004's] Leviathan. It’s just fucking awesome.”

A limited edition of the disc will be available for preorder beginning today on the band’s website. The Hunter Limited Edition Package will include a CD/DVD housed in a digi-pack with an exclusive alternative artwork cover, a 20″ x 30″ Lenticular Poster featuring the album cover of the standard CD and an “Augmented Reality Experience by Total Immersion” (it’s unclear what this is but as it sounds fairly legendary we have high hopes).

The preorder also includes an instant download of the first track off the record, “Black Tongue,” which also available for sale today, and an early download of “Curl Of The Burl.”

The album, recorded at Atlanta’s Doppler Studios with producer Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Gwen Stefani), was initially intended to follow a conceptual science fiction storyline, but that was later tossed aside. Drummer-vocalist Brann Dailor told Rolling Stone, “Brent was like, ‘Fuck all that! Let’s just have fun.”

You can check out a video of artist AJ Fosik’s process as he created the sculpture from the album’s cover with the soundtrack of new track “Black Tongue” below:
