Recommends: Slylab

Slylab started out as a solo project in May 2005. Ushering into the Ambient/IDM/Darkwave genre, Dean, the sole founder of Slylab, began composing songs using a handful of computer software and performing those songs live, supported by a number of hardware.
From early on, Slylab has been influenced by a variety of bands: Apparat, Armin Van Buuren, Autumn’s Grey Solace, Black Tape for A Blue Girl, edIT, Elika, Hammock, Lights Out Asia, Love Spirals Downwards, M83, Port-Royal, Robin Guthrie, Sigur Ros, Telefon Tel Aviv, The Album Leaf, Tim Hecker.
At a very early stage, the one-man band that is Slylab is in confusion as to where to publish the songs. At that time, Slylab’s songs changed hand only from one friend to another. A belated introduction and induction to the social networking site MySpace.com in the middle of 2007 marked the initial publication of Slylab’s songs. This didn’t disappoint as MySpace.com users were then able to access and listen to the songs and offers for further publications ensued. Such publications began with induction in compilations, released by both local and international labels. The most significant of these releases is undoubtedly Slylab’s first extended play, released by Phonotactics Netlabel (based in Portugal) in 2009.
Slylab evolved into a band format around 2009, with the inclusion of Donna (voice), Jajat (guitar), and Adhitya (guitar). Around that time, Slylab were also preparing materials for a new demo recording. Several months later, however, Donna resigned due to her pursuing a master’s degree. She was quickly replaced by Devita, who initially served as an additional player. After recording some guitar tracks for a compilation released by OpenLabs, titled The Ostend: Emerge, returned to their bands, practically leaving Dean alone. Dean was lucky to have met Rayhan (who, for several times, filled in the guitar parts for Slylab’s Unpad Jatinangor gigs), and Slylab thus rocked on.
After several personnel changes, Slylab is finally settled on the current line-up, Dean Genial Iqbal (programming, synth, keyboards) Devita Dwi Ayu Anggraini (voice) and Muhammad Rayhan Sudrajat (guitar, voice), still performing ambient music blended with rather gloomy, dreamy, and dark electronic pop, integrating touches of IDM and glitch adorned with elements of analog guitar, female voice, and male voice, with the latter two functioning either as vocal layers or lead voice. This is the new Slylab, with new materials, new concept, and new personnel.
Slylab is back to studio, working on new materials to be released as singles. After the release of these singles, Slylab will be soon working on new materials for the first album, set to be released in early 2011.
